Sea Glass Event

Exploring Glass Through Making

As part of the Through Glass brand, students, on the 25th February, were invited to take part in a hands on sea glass jewellery workshop. Then workshop offered participants the opportunity to transform sea glass into unique jewellery pieces, such as earrings, necklaces and rings. Much like the design process itself, sea glass begin as something rough and underfined before gradually becoming smooth, shaped and purposeful

Inside the Workshop

During the session, participants were introduced to the basics techniques used in sea glass jewellery design. Instructions were made and given out to students so they could also have a copy to take back home and do it by themselves as well. Students, using the guide, selected individual pieces of sea glass and the necessary equipment for the piece of jewellery they chose and learned how to carefully transform them into wearable designs

Using simple jewellery making tools and wire wrapping techniques, participants experimented with different ways of framing the glass to create pendants and other small pieces. The workshop encourages experimentation and creativity, allowing each participants to develop their own approach while learning practical making skills

Working with sea glass provided a unique way to engage with the Through Glass theme.

Creative Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants had produced a range of unique jewellery pieces, such as dangling earrings, necklaces and rings. The variety of outcomes demonstrated how even simple materials can inspire diverse creative responses

Reflection

For many students, the workshop offered a chance to step away from their university assignments and engage in more hands on form of making. This allows them to also socialise and have fun with their friends.

The students were able to approach the process in their own way, selecting pieces of glass that appealed to them and developing jewellery designs that reflected their individual creativity. The workshop created a relaxed and collaborative environment where students could learn new skills
