Made in Brunel, on Saturday 14th January, hosted the annual Made in Brunel Challenge. This year the event involved students of Level 1 and 2, across the School of Engineering and Design, getting into groups and working on a range of Made in Brunel briefs. It was a fantastic opportunity to gather ideas from across the whole school, on how best to build the Made in Brunel brand and raise the profile for 2012.
Briefs were set, concentrating on areas for development in 2012:
- Events and interactive workshops for the June 2012 Exhibition at Bargehouse.
- Exploring the journey of the Made in Brunel book from the show.
- Marketing and promotion development across the Internet and offline events.

An incredible 96 Level 1 and 2 students (giving up a whole Saturday..!) and 18 Level 3 students, acting as mentors for the teams, created some incredibly innovative, creative solutions to be put forward for development. The judges were incredibly impressed with the amount of sketch work, concept development, working prototypes and even detailed costings that came out from the presentations. Congratulations to the winners of their category:
- Group 8 – Juliana Lua, Heidi Gargareta, Chris Tait
- Group 10- Mark Baker, Darren Crossley, Alejandro Sanchez Lopez, Elise Hounslow
- Group 11 – Adam Meadows, Clare Kato, Thibault Milesi
- Group 14 – Julian Minuzzi, Karolis Jurevicius, Tejas Ashar, Dinesh Advani, Neethu Matthew
- Group 17 – Thomas Howlett, Matt Smith, Nathanael Hunt, Fabia Goff, Alykhan Bharmal, Isabelle Kidson

And the overall winners – Group 12 (Estelle Chung, Alexandra Godbolt, Abeer Choudry, Christopher Barlow and Joshua Stehr) The team will be presented their prize at the Made in Brunel exhibition in June, where hopefully the result of their work will be revealed and running at the show. Development will be made on as many of the submissions as possible, encouraging Level 1 and 2 students to run further Made in Brunel projects for the first time. Watch this space!

Every year, Made in Brunel encourages further integration from first year to final year students across the School of Engineering and Design. Saturday’s event was a huge success, and proved the value in collaborating at much as possible across the School to generate some original, creative ideas to raise the profile of Made in Brunel.
“I really enjoyed the entire day, with the group brainstorm in the morning and a nerve-racking demonstration to the judges. Overall an excellent day, skills were tested and friends were made.”
Matt Smith, Level 1 Design
“A huge thanks to the judges, mentors and all of the students who attended, as well as Jaguar Land Rover who sponsored the event. It was such a success, and so enjoyable to get fresh ideas into the development of Made in Brunel 2012. People have been asking if we can hold these monthly…we’ll have to see!”
Emily Riggs, Co-Director Made in Brunel 2012, Level 3 Product Design
